Ohio Law Changes October 6: ATV, Golf Cart and Scooter Crashes Can Carry More Serious Consequences

When most people hear the words “vehicular assault” or “vehicular homicide,” they probably picture a serious car or truck crash. Beginning October 6, 2026, Ohio law will make it clear that several other types of vehicles can be involved in these offenses as well.

Ohio House Bill 533 expands the state’s vehicular homicide and vehicular assault laws to include additional vehicles such as golf carts and other under-speed vehicles, motorized bicycles and mopeds, motor scooters, and all-purpose vehicles such as ATVs.

For residents of Southern Ohio, this isn’t an abstract change in the law. ATVs, side-by-sides, golf carts, scooters and similar vehicles are a familiar sight in many of our communities.

What Is Changing in Ohio?

Before House Bill 533, Ohio’s vehicular homicide and assault statutes already applied to motor vehicles, motorcycles and several other types of vehicles. The new law expands that list. Beginning October 6, the statutes specifically include:

• Under-speed vehicles, such as golf carts
• Motorized bicycles and mopeds
• Motor-driven cycles and motor scooters
• All-purpose vehicles, including many ATVs

The change applies to Ohio laws dealing with vehicular homicide and vehicular assault, including situations involving reckless operation and operating a vehicle while impaired. In other words, operating an ATV, golf cart or scooter doesn’t make the consequences of reckless or impaired operation any less serious.
