Southern Ohio Independence Day Safety

Independence Day is coming up on Wednesday and it looks like we’ll be in the midst of a pretty intense heat wave here in Southern Ohio. Make sure you play it safe in the heat while enjoying all of the holiday activities. Here are some tips to help you avoid problems while traveling and  spending time out in the heat.

Travel Tips

  • Make sure car, truck, van or RV can handle the trip. Finding out your air conditioning needed serviced halfway through your trip will not lead to a happy holiday. It’s no fun sitting along the highway broken down either.
  • Check to see if there are construction delays on your route. There have been a lot of articles in local media about traffic jams associated with construction on Interstate 77 in Southern West Virginia. Larger vehicles, such as trucks or recreational vehicles can sometimes encounter roadways with width restrictions and the associated detours can add hours to your trip. In some cases, it might be sensible to change your planned route before leaving home.
  • As we always recommend, obey the traffic laws. Lately, there have been a lot of accidents around Ohio where people were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from their vehicle. Be sure to wear your seat belt drive responsibly.

Heat Wave Tips

  • Stay hydrated. There’s nothing wrong with drinking some alcoholic beverages, but they won’t keep you hydrated so be sure to drink a lot of water if you’ll be out in the heat.
  • Try to stay in a shaded area if you’ll be outside. It will be much hotter out in the sun.
  • Don’t forget sunscreen. Nobody wants the annoyance of dealing with a sun burn while sweating it out in a heat wave.
  • Try to do any strenuous outdoor activities earlier or later in the day. Avoid doing those things in the afternoon when temperatures usually reach their peak.
  • Don’t forget to make sure your pets have plenty of water and are able to keep cool, especially if they’re covered in fur.

Lastly, you’ll probably find yourself around some fireworks this week. Make sure you play it safe with those. It’s much more difficult to dial our number after you’ve blown off your fingers. Be smart, stay cool and enjoy your Independence Day!
